Well...I've had fair luck with using a Hall sensor over time.

The Hall seismo displayed there is relatively big (really a
monster), compared to other capacitive S-G's; but it doesn't
have to be big.

I think a homebrew rig may bag more quakes than a geophone
and be more interesting and satisfying.
