I agree with that, in fact it would probably be more sensitive to
vertical than horizontal.
I would mount the magnet on the side of the arm and have it move toward
and away
from the coil. You'll have to balance it, of course, but you could always
put your
damping magnet on the opposite side and have it move around a nice chunk
of CU.
