Hello Geoffrey,

Yes, it can be done.

With one good well calibrated broadband you can calculate the back
azimuth, and you have the P and S time differences, you can calculate
the focal mechanism and do several different types of magnitudes
calculations.

One well know french commercial system call TREMORS does just that and
also issues tsunami warnings. It uses just one STS2 to do the job.

Many if not all of the bits and pieces to do all of the above are free
software.

With a well calibrated home made  x y z system I suspect you could
easily local local and regional events.  The key words in that last
line are "well calibrated".
