Geoff,
You are thinking about the New Madrid, MO fault system which is about
200 miles east of this area. The New Madrid system running basically NE
to SW (southern IL to Memphis TN) has been quiet since this stuff around
Guy, AR started about a year ago. There is another fault in AR running
running basically E-W called the Marianna fault (northeast of
Guy--basically Jonesboro to Marianna). In the last week, there was one
quake on this fault and several on the New Madrid system. In the
beginning, they thought that the Guy activity was associated with the
Marianna fault but now that is falling into disfavor. The Marianna
fault (very recently discovered) crosses a lot of gas and oil pipelines
going in the direction of the NE (to Chicago) and has raised some
concerns. The number of quakes in the Guy and Sparks, OK area far exceed
the quakes along the New Madrid system.
