David &Brent,
I did not mean to sound disparaging about seismographs such as your=
 own superb
instrument that I've been watching at Larry's site that you mentioned. Am =
also
glad to hear that quite a few amateurs have followed successfully in the fo=
otsteps
of the famous individuals you mentioned. What I wanted to point out is tha=
t
the VolksMeter is indeed broadband. I have never suggested that it could s=
ee=20
all earthquakes as well as yours does.
The Chile event in the last 24 hours proves your=20
point. But it is true that every VM logging to the same site also picked i=
t up=20
(though less impressively). The ones to whom my email was directed are
probably surprised that an instrument whose period is about 1s could=20
ever do so. I can also with it look at spectral components having much
longer periods than you mention (even those of Streckeisen origin).
Incidently, John Berger has recently built a gravitational pendulum
that uses optical (laser sensing). I hope that his interest will motivate
others to look at this mostly untapped area.
