Denny, There is a group here in New Zealand that has a fancy ring laser in an old WWII bomb shelter. They have shown that it is capable of recording seismically generated rotations. It's not the sort of laser you could build at home and the papers that they list are rather technical but there are some good pictures of the laser and the "cave".
